Between Now and Then

video projection (48"x64") @ Mercer Union, Toronto

Between Now and Then documents the changes occurring in a site over a 12 month period. I took photographs at two and a half week intervals and used these as source material to paint one canvas. Each new photo called for changes to be made to the existing painting from slight alterations to major shifts as we moved through the seasons. In the studio I shot a single frame for every 15 minutes of time spent painting. The video is a documentary or motion picture of the painting process as well as of the site itself as it metamorphoses through the year. I’m attracted to the idea of painting over the same surface as a way of thinking about the transitoriness and impermanence of things.

2002-2003, oil on canvas (48"x64") and 15 min. video projection also (48"x64")
