Transformer is the first work I made following my brother and father’s passing using their wardrobes as source material and medium (these are some of the same garments that will later be shredded to make “Cloud”).
After their deaths my impulse was to reanimate these articles that were like shells or skins, artifacts of lives lived and time passed. They carry memories as well as traces of the body they once contained. Fibres shift and mold to accommodate a person’s shape. And continue to reveal bits of a person’s history. Smell lingers long after the person has died and stains kept in check with regular washing while the person lived reemerge over time. Evidence of the now absent body.
